S.A.V.E.
S.A.V.E., or Substance Abuse Violence Education, is a cooperative effort between the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District and the Harlingen Police Department. The mission concept of the program is to provide students of the City of Harlingen with reinforcement of basic life skills with emphasis on becoming a responsible member of the community. S.A.V.E. is a nine week curriculum, targeted to 5th grade students, that addresses issues such as gang involvement, the misuse of legal drugs, and choices and consequences. S.A.V.E. is taught by a Uniform Officer of the the City of Harlingen Police Department. Each student is provided a workbook that is used during each of the nine lessons and all students completing the program receive a S.A.V.E. T-shirt and other items. The district also conducts an abbeviated 4th grade curriculum of 5 weeks to set the proper framework in preparation for 5th grade.  S.A.V.E. has been taught in the district for 14 years and has become a favorite among the students that participate in the curriculum.
