The identification
procedures for the G/T program are consistent with the program goals
and are in compliance with The Texas State Plan for Gifted/Talented
Education. Equally weighted criteria are employed for identification of
gifted/talented students at each grade level. A combination of
subjective and objective measures are used. The criteria chosen are
developmentally appropriate to grade levels. Once identified
gifted/talented, a student will remain in the program unless
exited.
Following are the steps in the identification process:
- Nomination is open to all school personnel and parents.
- All nominated students are scheduled for testing.
- Parental permission is obtained prior to testing.
- All student data is summarized on a matrix for each
student and a meeting of the district selection committee
is held. This committee is composed of at least three
staff members who have had training in G/T education.
One member of the committee will be the G/T Director.
- On a basis of points earned on the matrix, students are ranked by grade level district-wide.
- At least the top 5% of each grade level to be served is
invited to participate in the gifted/talented program. Other
students are notified that they were not selected.
- Parental permission is obtained for student program
participation.
- Late entrants or students moving into the school district
who qualify by meeting the same criteria will be placed in
the program by committee approval. A student who was
enrolled in a state-approved gifted program in his previous
district will be placed in the program by committee approval.
There is an on-going identification policy; placements are
subject to committee approval.
- Students, once identified, will remain in the program as long
as the program is meeting their educational needs. Students
who are not benefiting from the program may be removed
upon action by the selection committee after consultation
with the student, parents, and teachers. Formal exiting procedures will
be followed.
